The game started with fast play from both teams, determined to take the lead early on in the game, making it difficult for defence on both sides. Quick, accurate passing from Vicki Smith in centre court ensured quick play into the Loungers circle, making it challenging for Kiwis. However, any loose balls were quickly picked up by Maisie Unsworth. Accurate shooting from Ava Johnston and Stella Oldbury ensured Loungers came out on top with a 10-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Fast play continued into the second quarter with little changes made from either side. Strong passing continued, making it challenging for both teams to make interceptions. With Kylie Wood feeding her shooters accurately and Zoey Symington shooting well, Loungers defence worked tirelessly to snatch up rebounds whenever there was a chance. This resulted in a quick turnover throughout the centre court into Lounger’s shooting circle, still remaining ahead with a 16-13 lead to Loungers.
Going into the third quarter, it was all to play for. Kiwis came back on court with a new determination. Unstoppable interceptions from Kim Johnson and quick work, linking defence and attacking play up the court from Alina Murray, put pressure on Loungers in all areas of the court. Both teams were matching each other goal for goal. Strong, fast play from Kiwis ensured a lead of 23-19 at the end of the third quarter.
Both teams came back on court for the final quarter of the match, both fighting to win. Loungers defenders Claire Johnston and Sally Sandison were making it very difficult for Kiwis attack to feed balls into their shooters but they were patient and timed their feeds well. Louise Birnie provided vital support throughout the court and Kaitlin Leslie was shooting well and fighting to intercept rebounds from any missed shots. It was a well-matched contest, with Loungers able to make a comeback to regain their lead and take the win with a final score of 29-27. Players of the match were Louise Birnie for Loungers and Maisie Unsworth for Kiwis.
