LOUNGERS 31 WHALSAY 38

The game started out at a fast pace with both teams matching each other goal for goal. It was a relatively low scoring first quarter as both teams settled but Whalsay put the pressure on as they forced the turnover to take the lead 7-5.

The second quarter was dominated by the Whalsay team as they worked well as a defensive unit through the court making it difficult for the Loungers team to attack. Whalsay’s mid court players Lianne Jamieson and Catherine Williamson linked well to feed their shooters. GA Debbie Smith was unstoppable taking shots from anywhere in the circle with a high success rate. Loungers struggled to find their feet in this quarter with Whalsay pushing ahead and increasing their lead to 22-13.

Loungers made a few team changes going into the third quarter as Vicki Smith moved into the defensive circle and Beth Mouat moved into attack. The changes seemed to have a positive effect on their game as they started matching Whalsay goal for goal again. It was still proving difficult for Loungers to reduce the goal difference with Debbie Smith not missing many shots and the defensive circle pairing of Natalie Constable and Shelley Sandison keeping down on the Loungers shooters. Whalsay maintained their lead 32-22 going into the final quarter.

Loungers tried to build on the run of better play they had in the previous quarter. Loungers circle defenders Jennifer Thomson and Vicki Smith were working hard to deny the Whalsay shooters space in the circle to put up their shots. Loungers put in their best quarter of the match with much slicker attacking play but it was too late with Whalsay’s lead just too much to catch with the final score 38-31. Whalsay put in a great team performance with Debbie Smith getting Whalsay’s player of the match and Vicki Smith given Loungers player of the match
