Unst 24 V 18 Yell

Unst 24 V 18 Yell

Unst versus Yell is always a highly anticipated match and this meeting didn’t disappoint. Both teams came on court with fire in their bellies. Yell took the first centre and very quickly converted into a goal with precision shooting from Yell’s Stephanie Keith (GA). Unst responded with a speedy first goal from Marie Leask (GS). Unst shooters were finding it tough to work around the height of Yell’s defensive players Lesley Strachan (GD) and Kerry Nicholson (GK), with Unst having to pass in and out before they could get a chance to shoot. It was Yell that held on and took advantage of any Unst mistakes and the quarter ended 7-6 to Yell.

Unst made some changes to their team coming into the 2nd quarter. Claire Priest came on as GS and took some terrific long range shots, upping the score for Unst. Meanwhile Martha Moar came on as GK for Unst and working with Linda Thomson (GD), changed the dynamic of play in the Yell shooting circle. Yell’s Martha Colclough (GS) worked tirelessly to find space, with great supportive play from Sandra Petrie (WA). Unfortunately for Yell there was too much pressure from the Unst defence in their shooting circle and the half time score saw Unst edge ahead 12-9.

Going into the third quarter Yell held firm. Steady and level headed play from Yell’s GK Nicolson continued to hinder the Unst shooters. Meanwhile, determined play from Alice Jamieson (C) helped Yell turn around several Unst centre passes. This wasn’t enough to secure Yell a lead though, as Erin Spence (GA) continued to battle hard to find her space against Strachan (GD), to keep Unst in front. The scoring was even in this quarter with 7 goals to Unst and 6 to Yell in this fiery clash, but Unst moved into the final quarter ahead 19-15.

Both sides showed great determination to gain the win going into the last quarter and emotions were high. Spence at GA for Unst showed maturity beyond her years as she knuckled down and continued to test the Yell defence. Nicolson for Yell (GK) kept the pressure on Unst shooting circle right to the final whistle helping to keep this a low scoring game. Ashley Symington (C) from Unst showed stamina and speed as she kept play moving for Unst despite attempts from Yell to intercept play. The scoring in this quarter was close with Unst only 1 point ahead of Yell, but it was enough to secure the game. The intense North Isles derby match ended 24-18 to Unst and many thanks must go to umpires Joanne Stewart and Elaine Burgess for managing such a competitive match. Players of the match were Erin Spence for Unst and Kerry Nicolson for Yell.
