Unst 46 V McEwans 26

The game started quickly with McEwans winning the toss & making good use of it. Both teams were fighting for every ball and took a while to settle.  There were lots of interceptions and changes in possession but Unst settled more quickly and some accurate shooting from Chelsea Jamieson and Marie Robertson saw Unst an early lead taking the first quarter 12-8.

McEwans made some changes coming into the second quarter and knew they had ground to make up. Unst had settled well and steady mid court play from Irena Polson and Ashley Symington saw Unst shooters get lots of chances in the circle which they made the most of. Emily Henderson settled quickly into GS and – despite Unst defenders working hard – worked well with Anna Sutherland to make their chances into goals. At the other end of the court McEwans defence were working tirelessly and got lots of touches in the circle forcing Chelsea Jamieson and Marie Robertson to take long shots but their shots were on target and Unst widened their lead, ending the second quarter 22-12.

There was all to play for coming into the third quarter and despite strong defense from Unst’s Linda Thomson and Ailidh Risk who both made some vital interceptions, Anna Sutherland was shooting from the edge of the circle and rarely missing. The speed of play picked up and some quick turn arounds in defence from Ellie Sutherland saw McEwans gain possession. Eileen Robertson was working hard to get the ball into the circle where McEwans shooters Anna and Emily lost no time in turning chances into goals but with the increase in speed came an increase in loose balls which Unst were fast to pick up. Fast play up the court by Irena Polson, Naomi Brown and Shona Johnson saw Unst score several goals in succession, increasing their lead 37-18.

Both teams made changes coming into the last quarter. McEwans saw Amber Paton at C, Joanne Stewart came on at GA and Laura Polson at GK, while Unst saw Linda Thomson move out to GD and Ashley Symington come on at GK. Unst scored 2 goals in quick succession but McEwans settled quickly into their changes and some long powerful passes between Amber Paton, Eileen Roberston and Joanne Stewart saw McEwans pull back despite excellent defending from Linda and Ashley. Nicola Polson was defending well at centre passes causing Unst’s defence to have to support play into the shooting circle. Ellie Sutherland and Laura Polson were making the shooters work hard for every pass and got lots of touches, however Unst’s shooters kept their heads and continued to score long range shots and the game ended 46-26. Players of the match were Anna Sutherland for McEwans and Marie Robertson for Unst.
