Whalsay 34 – 28 Ness

This was an evenly-matched, fast-paced game throughout meaning each side were forced to work hard for possession and to secure goals. Ness were quick off the mark taking the first three goals of the game. Whalsay fought back into the game to draw level with calmer linking play and well-timed feeds from Marie Anderson into the attacking circle, despite tight defending from Ruth Christie and Ailish Parham. The strong, early start from Ness saw them finish the first quarter with a one-goal lead.

The second quarter continued with end-to-end play from both teams. Both teams were working hard to pick up any loose balls. Whalsay made some crucial interceptions and with accurate shooting from their shooters Lara Kay and Debbie Irvine meant they could take the lead 17-14 going in to the 2nd half.

Ness came out fighting in the third quarter. Aimee budge for Ness matched Catherine Williamson’s speed throughout the court at centre, and along with Katie Moore worked tirelessly to get the ball into the attacking circle. Estella Smith rarely missed a shot allowing Ness to close the gap. The third quarter ended even with the score 22-22, leaving all to play for in the final quarter.

Whalsay were determined to come back into the game. Whalsay defended all up the court, piling the pressure on Ness. Their efforts paid off as they managed to steal Ness centres to take the lead. Ness were undeterred and fought back, but were unfortunate not to convert their quick play into goals. Whalsay held onto their lead to win 34-28. Players of the match were Marie Anderson for Whalsay and Estella Smith for Ness.
